Day 1 of the 2016 Norfolk Winter School Games kicked off in style with some of the most promising young skiers from across the County coming together at the Norfolk Snowsports Club in Norwich for the Yr 7-9 & 10-11 Skiing Finals.
The event was the culmination of a series of qualifying events which had been taking place within Norfolk’s eight School Sports Partnerships (SSPs) over the last few months. The finals saw teams of eight pupils from each of the SSPs battling it out in three events;
- Individual slalom
- Skier X
- Team Relay
The headline results for each event were;
Individual slalom
Year 7-9
1st – Billy Heseltine (East Norfolk SSP)
2nd – Oliver Geary (Norwich East SSP)
3rd – Ewan Croughan (South Norfolk SSP)
Year 10-11
1st – Hannah Smith (Norwich SSP)
2nd – Olivia Heseltine (East Norfolk SSP)
3rd – Amelia Williamson (Norwich SSP)
Skier X
1st – Oliver Geary (Norwich East SSP)
2nd – Pan Yiasimni (Norwich SSP)
=3rd – Ewan Croughan (South Norfolk SSP)
=3rd – Megan Day (West Norfolk SSP)
Team Relay
1st – Norwich SSP
2nd – North Norfolk SSP
=3rd – South Norfolk SSP
=3rd -West Norfolk SSP

Jo Thompson, Project Officer for Active Norfolk said;
“Our objective is to get more kids, more active more often. Todays event is for non club skiers who want to improve their skiing skills and want to compete”.
One competitior commented;
“Its something completely different and I think it is really fun to do”
Jon Osborne, School Games Organisor for the Norwich School Sport Partbership said;
“Our job is to use sport as a tool, its about helping young people find an activity that they can enjoy so they can benefit from being active for the rest of their lives”.
