School Games Day 3 – Sportshall Athletics ‘Jumps’ into Focus

As part of the of 2019 Norfolk School Games Winter Finals the Sportshall Athletics County Level 3 competitions took place at the Sportspark. Close to 300 young athletes from Years 3 through to 6 took part in a wide range of Athletics events inside the fantastic facility of the Sportspark & tried to score as many points as possible for their Partnership teams.

Each of the Teams had qualified to represent their local School Sports Partnership (SSP) by taking part in a prior qualifying competition. Each SSP team included competitors in the Yr5/6 and Yr3/4 events with the competition for the younger children in only its second year within the Norfolk School Games.

Sportshall Athletics is an indoor form of track and field for children between the ages of 4 and 16. It was created to provide a safe and warm environment for young athletes to train during the cold and dark winter months and quickly developed into a new form of team competition. The program focusses on fitness and multi-skill development providing grounding for all sports. It is totally inclusive, encourages children to get fit and promotes friendship whilst having lots of fun.

It was the older children who took centre stage first, with Pupils from Years 5 & 6 competing for their SSP. It didn’t take long for the atmosphere to hit fever pitch as the boys & girls were cheered on to some fantastic performances driven by great displays of enthusiasm & sportsmanship.

After a short break for lunch it was then the team of the Year 3 & 4 pupils to shine, and they produced a fantastic atmosphere! They did superbly well and showed some excellent determination & talent to put on a real show for the watching parents to crown a wonderful day of sporting action.

We would like to take this chance to say a huge thank you to Adam from Sportshall UK who compered, organised and ran the day in a brilliant manner that had everyone engaged, enthused & unable to stop smiling! The event was also supported by Sports Leaders from Taverham High School, who acted as officials for the Track events and ran the Field events so we would like to extend a big thank you to them as well. Also, we were incredibly lucky to be able to have 2018 GB Commonwealth Games Athlete Iona Lake there with us on the day, who handed out the much sought-after medals & trophies as well as provided a huge source of inspiration for all the youngsters.

The 2019 Norfolk School Games Finals take a short break now, coming back with the Year 3-6 Girls Football Competition on February 14th at Goals Soccer Centre in Norwich.
