So the big day finally arrived and the 2015 Norfolk Summer School Games Finals are now underway. Day 1 of the Games lived up to all of the hype and provided a great opening day to the Finals.
Day 1 included events at two different venues;
- Yr 5-6 High 5 Netball Finals
- Yr 4-6 High 5 Netball Finals (Small Schools)
- Yr 7-8 Basketball Finals
- Yr 7-8 & 9-10 Aquathlon Finals
- Yr 1-11 Special Schools Games
- Yr 5-6 Mixed Kwik Cricket Finals
High 5 Netball Finals
In the netball event, over 200 young pupils battled it out on the outdoor courts at the Sportspark as well as neighbouring City Academy Norwich to be crowned 2015 High 5 Netball Champions. The event was split into two competitions, with one for pupils in Yr 5-6 from schools with more than 125 pupils and a separate one for the county’s smaller rural schools with less than 125 pupils.
In the big schools event, 14 teams took part in an initial group stage with teams split into four groups. After completion of matches in a round robin format, the top two teams in each group then moved on to the Cup Competition (2 groups) with the third and forth placed teams going into a Plate Competition (2 groups). Teams within each group played against each other with the teams finishing in the same position in each group playing off against each other for their overall position. Once all of the matches where completed, the following overall results were announced;
1st – Stoke Holy Cross Primary (South Norfolk SSP)
2nd – Cringleford Primary A (Norwich SSP)
3rd – Cringleford Primary B (Norwich SSP)

Teams in the Small Schools events were split into two groups with all of the teams playing against each other in a round robin format. The teams finishing in each group them played off to decide the overall positions. The top three placed teams were;
1st – Garboldisham Primary (South Norfolk SSP
2nd – Downham Prep (West Norfolk SSP)
3rd – Docking Primary (West Norfolk SSP)

All of the officials and helpers for both competitions were volunteers from local netball clubs as well as pupils from City Academy Norwich and Reepham High School.

Basketball Finals
Whilst the netballers were competing outside on the netball courts, the top Yr 7-8 basketballers from across the County were showing off their skills inside in the Sportsparks sportshalls. SSP teams were split into two groups, with three teams in each group. After completing all of their group stage fixtures, the teams that finished in 1st/2nd/3rd place in each group played against each other to decide the overall placings.
The headline results were;
1st – Norwich SSP
2nd – Norwich East SSP
3rd – West Norfolk SSP

Aquathlon Finals
Later on in the day the Aquathletes gathered to take part in the finals for their event which included a swim in the Sportsparks pool followed by a run around the facilities running track. Pupils competed in teams of four (2 boys/2 girls) on behalf of their SSP, in two age categories (Yr 7-8 & Yr 9-10).
Pupils in each age category completed the following distances;
Year 7-8 – Swim = 100m, Run = 800m
Year 9-10 – Swim = 150m, Run = 1200m
The headline results were;
Year 7-8 Race
1st – West Norwich and Dereham SSP A (25.12)
2nd – South Norfolk SSP (25.45)
3rd – West Norwich and Dereham SSP B (26.28)
Year 9-10 Race
1st – North Norfolk SSP (32.47)
2nd – West Norwich and Dereham SSP (35.28)
3rd – South Norfolk SSP (36.04)

Kwik Cricket Finals
Whilst all of the action was underway at the Sportspark, the Yr 5-6 Mixed Kwik Cricket Finals took place at Horsford Cricket Club. Mixed teams from across Norfolk took part in the event ran in partnership with the Norfolk Cricket Board.
