Today saw the 2015 Norfolk Winter School Games Finals kick off in style with two exciting events at two of Norfolks best sporting facilities.
Special School Games
This morning 150 pupils from 8 of the County’s Special Schools came together at the UEA Sportspark to compete in a range of sports including; Indoor Rowing, New Age Kurling, Tri Golf and Badminton. Each event was split into two categories, one for pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) and one for pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
The headline results were;
Indoor Rowing
MLD 1st – Fred Nic A, 2nd – Sidestrand B, 3rd – Sidestrand A
SLD 1st – Warren School, 2nd – John Grant, 3rd – Clare School
New Age Kurling
MLD 1st – Fred Nic A, 2nd – Fred Nic B, 3rd – Sidestrand A
SLD 1st – John Grant, 2nd – Clare School, 3rd – Sheringham Woodfields
Tri Golf
MLD 1st – Sidestrand A, 2nd – Sidestrand B , 3rd – Fred Nic B
SLD 1st – Warren School, 2nd – Clare School, 3rd – John Grant
Badminton
MLD 1st – Fred Nic A, 2nd – Sidestrand A, 3rd – Fred Nic B

Yr 7-11 Skiing Competition
Later on in the day 64 young skiers from school years 7-11 battled it out at the Skiing Finals at the Norfolk Snowsport Club in Trowse. All of the pupils had qualified to take part in the event by competing in local qualifying events held within the eight SSP in Norfolk earlier in the year.
During the Finals the teams of skiers (up to 8 from each SSP) took part in three events; Individual Slalom Time Trial, Skier Cross and Dual Slalom Team Relay. The action was fast and furious with many of the races being extremely close.
The headline results were;
Individual Slalom Time trial
Year 7-9
1st – Cameron Kirby (West Norwich & Dereham SSP)
2nd – Rick Williamson (Norwich SSP)
3rd – Billy Heseltine (East Norfolk SSP)
Year 10-11
1st – Ethan Greary (Norwich East SSP)
2nd – Katherine Day (West Norfolk SSP)
3rd – Anna Parkin (Norwich East SSP)
Skier Cross
1st – Ethan Geary (Norwich East SSP)
2nd – Cameron Kirby (West Norwich and Dereham SSP)
3rd – Euan Croughan (South Norfolk SSP)
Dual Slalom Team Relay
1st – West Norwich Dereham SSP
2nd – Norwich SSP
3rd – North Norfolk SSP

Day 1 of the Games was a huge success and set the tone for the next 5 days of competition which continues on Monday with Day 2 of the Games which will see 640 pupils from school years 4-6 take part in the Norfolk Winter School Games Cross Country Finals at Greshams School in Holt.
