The activities were delivered by representatives from Active Norfolk, as well as volunteers from local community clubs. The event was also supported by young leaders from Diss High School.

One of the young leaders, Will Ashwood in Y12 at Diss HS, highlighted the experience he had gained from being involved in the day:

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to interact with a variety of different people and experience new activities. In school, we usually have to lead things independently so it was great to work alongside and learn from the local club representatives. Being involved in an event like this has helped me to see the value of sport and the impact that it can have on everyone – when they achieve and get success, it makes you feel good as well. I’m really keen to continue volunteering in the future and would now be confident to lead the new activities we covered today.”

Mrs (Emma) Somers from Diss High School who accompanied the young leaders also praised the event:

“It’s given us an opportunity to create some really good links. We’re now looking at working with The Clare School to do some training on signing and also liaising with Active Norfolk about them coming in to deliver a course on Adapted Sports.”

Ellen Vanlint, Sports Development Officer at Active Norfolk, added, “This event is always very popular and thoroughly enjoyed by the schools who attend. We’re really lucky to have the support of local volunteers and the expertise and enthusiasm they bring to the day – it’s always such a good atmosphere. I would particularly like to thank:

  • Suzanne Benton (Badminton)
  • Mark & Lindsey Dare (Wensum Table Tennis Club)
  • Aaron Roberts (Active Norfolk)
  • Paul Evans (Active Norfolk)
  • The young leaders from Diss HS

We’re already starting to plan the next Special School Games event which will be taking place in the Summer Term (23/06/17) and as always we would welcome new schools to get involved.”
