What a brilliant start to the 2020 Norfolk Winter School Games, with our Year 7/8 Handball Finals!
Just under 200 boys and girls from across the county arrived, resplendent in their School Sports Partnership colours, and competed with great enthusiasm and determination in this exciting, and fast moving event.
We introduced Handball, as a ‘development sport’ into our School Games offer a couple of years ago, and it is growing year on year with, literally, hundreds of Year 7&8 boys and girls entering Level 2 events in their quest to represent their individual SSPs in this year’s Norfolk School Games.
We are grateful to James Panayi, Head of PE at Sprowston Community Academy, who is a great ambassador for this sport and has been instrumental in, not only coaching teams and organizing competitive opportunities for our pupils, but also for running Teacher Insets to promote the sport throughout the region.
Today’s event confirms the growing popularity of this sport, and its attraction as an ‘alternative activity’ alongside our more traditional offers in our PE programmes.
Many thanks, and much appreciation, to the University of East Anglia PGCE PE students who took time out of their extremely busy course to officiate at our event, and also to the 4 Year 10 Sprowston students whose assistance was invaluable in helping to keep our competition running smoothly.
Thank you to all staff members and volunteers across Norfolk who have given up their time to prepare the teams who competed today, they are a tribute to your efforts, and I am sure you are, rightfully, very proud of your teams.

Very well done to all of the teams who took part today! The teams played a ‘round robin’ format in the morning followed by ‘play offs’ in the afternoon, to determine the final placings.
Congratulations, go especially, to Thorpe St Andrew School & 6th Form (girls team) and Wymondham College (boys team) who took 1st place in their respective events, and will now be invited to represent Norfolk at the Regional Handball Finals in Cambridge later this year. We wish both teams the very best in their competitions.
